Armed Forces Covenant signed and Bronze Award received from defence Employment Recognition Scheme

We confirmed our support of Armed Forces personnel in the workplace by adding our name to the Armed Forces Covenant (AFC). To reiterate our commitment, we have simultaneously received the bronze award from the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS). As per the AFC, we "pledge that together we acknowledge and understand that those who serve or who have served in the armed forces, and their families, should be treated with fairness and respect in the communities, economy and society they serve with their lives." This isn't a new standard for us, but it is a public declaration. It has always...

UK Government Boosts Renewable Budget by over 50%

In a boost to the renewable energy sector, the UK Government confirmed a budget to £1.56 billion to the allocation round of contracts. This uplift has resulted in a record-breaking number of contracts awarded. Including 9 offshore wind contracts! The new offshore projects include Hornsea 3 and Hornsea 4, off the coast of Yorkshire. Respectively, they are set to be Europe’s largest and second-largest wind farms. A substantial increase in clean energy production as well as providing an increase of job availability to the UK market. Energy Secretary, Ed Miliband, is hailing this successful round of allocations as a ‘significant step...

Wind Turbine Recyclability Reaches new Heights with Breakthrough Biomass Resin

Ahead of zero waste week (2nd September), let’s talk wind turbine recyclability… In a bid to support a circular economy, researchers have been trialling and now successfully tested, a new bio-derivable resin (nicknamed PECAN) to use in turbines. Researchers at the US Department of Energy’s, National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) began experimenting with various feedstocks before settling on PECAN. This new resin has demonstrated usability of the product in turbine blades of 9-metres. At this level it is deemed scalable to the 60/80/100m blades required for offshore energy production.   This resin shows no signs of compromise over time or in the...

Deep Sea Mining for a Renewable Future?

Science and technological advances enrich and alter our understanding of our living planet everyday. Yet nothing has remained as mysterious as the deepest depths of our oceans. The Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ), a deep sea Pacific mountain range, has long been of great interest to scientific research. But with depths greater than 4,000 meters exploration has been limited. However, some of the latest studies have been producing landmark discoveries. One thing we are certain of is the seabed here contains highly sought after treasures in the shape of ‘sea potatoes.’ There are great fields of these black rocks, rich in cobalt, nickel...

Mental Health Awareness Week 2024

Mental health is not just the absence of mental disorder. It is defined as a ‘state of mental well-being that enables people to cope with the stresses of life, realise their abilities, learn well and work well, and contribute to their community.’ (WHO). If we were to look over the thousands of photos submitted a few months back for our mosaic wall, used at Oceanology, the overall picture is glowing with positivity. Each photo show’s smiling faces, beautiful sunsets and incredibly inspiring scenery but is that an accurate reflection of offshore life? Probably for about 85% of offshore workers life...

CMSourcing operations team get hands on with Fugro training

The operations team were recently offered an opportunity to get inside Fugro’s state of the art training centre in Plymouth. Being office based the majority of time this was a great chance to reconnect with the work and technology our contractors use. The opportunity arose after speaking with Darren (Fugro Training Centre Manager) at Oceanology International 2024 in March. During this chat it was clear that Fugro’s commitment to being a military friendly employer aligned with our support of the Armed Forces Covenant. So an opportunity to strengthen our partnership was gratefully received. To then sit in the seats of...

2024 Spring Budget – we’ve found a positive for offshore wind energy!

Whilst there wasn’t much push from Hunt’s spring budget relating directly to climate change, there was some thoughts on energy security. The budget does elaborate on some points raised in the Kings Speech in November. To sweeten key renewable energy developers, more details of the Contracts for Difference (CfD), round 6 auction have also been shared. For this latest round there has been a budget allocation worth just over £1bn, £800m specifically for offshore wind. This is the largest ever allocation and certainly a welcome promise to developers, and in turn consumers. The auction is set to take place on...

2023 Renewable Energy stats are in

This might be obvious, but now the stats are in - 2023 was a big year for renewable energy! The UK Government revealed a 4 year high for renewable energy production. In 2023 alone, this would have been enough to provide power to each of the 28 million homes in the UK. Last year, as a share of total generation, renewables increased to 44.5%, outpacing fossil fuel production. Of this, it was offshore wind production that saw the biggest increase from 2022 to 2023. Up from a 10% share of electricity generated to 14.5%. Onshore wind, solar, bioenergy and hydro accounting...

Christmas Kindness: £2,000 donation to the Beacon Centre

As we near Christmas, we come to the end of this #ChristmasKindness campaign. The final act of kindness in this series of ours is a big one for many reasons. Our final charitable donation is £2,000 and has been sent to the Beacon Centre, Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton (Love Musgrove). This cancer treatment centre, for better or worse, has been a part of almost everyone’s lives here in the CMSourcing head office. It’s where the campaign began and where we wanted it to end. We are all familiar with the saying ‘in a world where you can be anything,...
